Old Saint Petersburg Stock Exchange and Rostral Columns

Old Saint Petersburg Stock Exchange and Rostral Columns  is one of the most alluring ensembles of the Northern capital. From the Stock Exchange Square departs two different embankments - the Universitetskaya and Makarov’s . This is one of the most favourite places of both the citizens and visitors of Saint - Petersburg. From both sides of the Stock Exchange Square two massive columns tower over the city, serving as the lighthouses while entering the city’s port. Their height is estimated around 32 meters. The Rostral Columns are decorated with the parts of a ship's bow - anchors and rostrals. The enormous figures symbolize the great Russian rivers such as Volga, Dnepr, Volkhov, and Neva. According to the legend, the Roman Empire had a practice in honor of the marine victories to tower the columns and embellish them with rostrals, ramming the enemy’s ships. The Rostral Columns symbolize the great power of Russia as a sea nation.
